Chris and I covered men’s 5,000m speed skating race on the first day of competition in the 2018 Winter Olympics. It was unreal getting to watch the race up so close when I’m used to seeing it on TV, and seeing them race right in front, you really feel first hand how fast they are.
But since it’s also the first event I was covering, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be to assert my presence as a journalist. I felt shy when I was getting a spot at the press desk, just trying to make sure I’m not invading into anyone’s space when I actually have access to any media related facilities as much as any other journalists here. And then at the mixed zones, I was so intimidated by the AP journalist next to me that I let her ask so many questions before me.
But I know starting tomorrow, I will stand my ground because I’m as legitimate as any other journalist here….right?
