Mentorship

Medill has one of the most illustrious alumni networks in sports media, and the Medill Sports Mentorship Program leverages that network for your personal gain. Students in the program are paired with an alum or industry professional who offers guidance, coaching, advice and networking opportunities throughout the student’s tenure at Medill.

Students are encouraged to let their mentor know what they are interested in, what they want to do professionally and what they want to learn. They should feel able to turn to their mentor for career advice, a helpful eye on a story they’re working on or just as an outlet to offer guidance.

Mentors and mentees are paired based on the student’s professional goals and interests. The two communicate throughout the mentee’s tenure at Medill, and hopefully they continue their relationship after graduation.

“Only through the Medill Sports Mentorship Program can you have the opportunity to build a meaningful, life-changing, professional relationship and friendship with the best of the best in the world of sports journalism. I was lucky enough to have one of the people I look up to most in sports journalism as my mentor and his advice and networking helped me to achieve my dream of being an NFL reporter.” – Lee Schechter MSJ14
